1992 Conservative Win

John Major's soapbox was credited with the narrow victory of the Conservatives on 335 seats over Neil Kinnock and the Labour party on 271 seats. The newly merged Liberal Democrats under Paddy Ashdown won 20 seats.

Margaret Thatcher had been unseated as Tory leader in 1990 following party splits over the Poll Tax and Europe.

The election campaign saw Labour focus on public services, and the Conservatives talk of "Labour's tax bombshell".

Overall on 9 April 1992, Labour gained at the expense of the Liberal Democrats, and the Conservatives decreased by 0.5% nationally. Swingplot 92 has the details.
