2001 Labour Win

Tony Blair led the Labour party to their second landslide victory on 7 June 2001. Labour won 413 seats, well ahead of William Hague and the Conservatives on 166 seats. The Liberal Democrats, led by Charles Kennedy, won 52 seats.

Although the Conservatives tried to cast the election as a Euro-referendum, the campaign otherwise resembled a re-run of 1997.

Labour enjoyed a successful economy, and Tony Blair continued to enjoy strong personal popularity.

There was a swing of about 1% from Labour to Conservatives, which did not cause many seats to change hands. See Swingplot 2001 for details.
